Where the Wild Things Are

Spike Jonze is directing the movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic and beloved children's book: Where the Wild Things Are. So far, visually it looks amazing and like it will be great fun however the movie won't be out in theaters until October 16th so in the mean time catch the awesome trailer here and enjoy it in HD while listening to the new acoustic version of the Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" that it is set to.

Fleet Foxes

Review: Pitchfork
Buy: Amazon

This album came out last year and made the top spot of many Best Of 2008 music lists.  It took me a while to get in the mood to listen to this record in full because of it's soft church-hall sound.  However once I finally got in the mood, I discovered an album full of luscious soaring harmonies and lovely hum/sing-along melodies throughout.  It is a record that gets more rewarding with each play.  This is the "Special Edition" version which includes the acclaimed self-titled album along with the Sun Giant EP tracks.

Mykonos (My favorite track)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I don't know why this entire post mysteriously disappeared...

Review: Pitchfork
Buy It: Amazon

I really dig this album. Much better and more cohesive than previous efforts.

The first single: "Zero" Directed by Barney Clay and shot in San Francisco.

I Need This Vending Machine

This may be a year old but it's new to me. Those who know me will know of my massive coke addiction that I've been trying to curb for the last two months. More here.

My Business

DL: My Business

This song was born out of an E/G riff progression I had came up with while jamming around in my room about two years ago which was when I was feeling pretty low and cynical. The song has taken on many various forms since then and still needs a bassline and a more definitive arrangement but here is the basic idea and groove. This is the first proper recording I've done for this song using Apple's GarageBand. I'll continue to update it as I put finishing touches on the track.

Metric

DL: Fantasies
Buy It: Amazon

Metric is a four-piece indie rock band originally from New York but are now based in Toronto, Canada. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live at the El Rey a few years back and it was one of the most fun and memorable concert experiences I ever had. Singer Emily Haines is a delight to watch perform in person as her energy and zeal just completely expands from the stage to envelope and captivate the entire audience until they're hanging on her every move. With previous albums "Grow Up and Blow It Away," "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?" and "Live It Out," the band created dynamic music with chugging basslines, catchy synths, crunchy guitars, and danceable rhythms topped with interesting lyrical content. "Fantasies" is their fourth album and latest effort which continues that trend while seeing the band hone their craft even further.

"Gimme Sympathy" is the first single:

And here are their excellent aforementioned previous efforts:

DL: Grow Up and Blow Away

DL: Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?

DL: Live It Out

Mos Def

Pitchfork reports that Mos Def is set to release his fourth album: "The Ecstatic" on June 9th. This is exciting news since Mos Def is one of my favorite Hip-Hop artistes mainly due to the classic masterpiece "Black on Both Sides" and the self-titled Black Star album with Talib Kweli which are among my favorite Hip-Hop albums of all time. Here's the first single: "Life in Marvelous Times.(MP3)" The music is not quite as jazzy/soulful or as organic as the sound found on the aforementioned albums but it's still quite potent lyrically and a welcome departure from the crap you find on the radio today.

And because I'm feeling nostalgic...

DL: Black on Both Sides

DL: Black Star

Although Mos Def's second official album failed to live up to the heights of Black On Both Sides and is uneven at times with its direction, it still possesses many worthwhile gems such as Sunshine (MP3), check out...

DL: The New Danger

This Would Have Been So Much Better Than Spider-Man 3

Brilliant.

Even this would have been better.

Apparently Marvel bought the rights to Japanese Spider-Man and will air an episode per week here.

QuickSand

DL: QuickSand

Thursday was a very long day and the drive home was quite welcome. Sometimes all you need to take the edge off is just rolling down the windows and putting your iPod on shuffle. This tune is just a small burst of inspiration and a glimpse into what I was feeling on the way home. After hearing the bassline in my head, the first words out of my mouth were "I'm just sinking, just sinking in the quicksand" and the title of the song was simply born out of that random lyric.

Of course, this is just a rough first draft of those ideas and I'll begin putting up the progress of all the songs I write on this blog.
